I grew up in the west of Ireland, in Co. Clare. From the age of 13, I spent my summers working in my father's butcher shop, where I first saw what it takes to run a business under pressure.

After completing my degree in electronic engineering, I spent a summer in New York and San Francisco — half the time working construction, the other half sinking pints of Bud Light. I came home and did two years as a graduate engineer in a manufacturing plant supplying gas testing units to the construction industry.

My girlfriend at the time and I moved to Melbourne on a working holiday visa. Turns out the relationship couldn't survive the Victorian weather any better than I could — two weeks of grey skies and rain and we were done. I packed up and moved to Sydney for the sunshine and the beaches, and never looked back. I did a stint as a trade assistant on commercial and civil sites before landing a job as a recruiter for a labour hire company. From there I worked my way up — recruiter, labour hire manager, account manager, then external sales.

Along the way I got sponsored, which eventually led to permanent residency — and once that was locked in, starting my own business became a real option. I left the labour hire company in 2024 and travelled through South-East Asia, then came back to trade work in 2025 while I figured out my next move. In June 2025 I joined a mining and construction recruitment company as a business development manager, working across permanent and temp-to-perm placements — and used everything I'd learned on both sides of the phone call to build Rockmount.

That's the difference with Rockmount — every placement is made by someone who's actually done the job, not just filled it.
